The Nenets people living in the Yamalo-Nenets autonomous district of Northern Siberia is confronted with the industrial exploitation of the tundra arctical zone which contains reserves of oil and gaz. In this regard the protection of sacred landscapes and cult places as an integral part of Nenets life is of utmost urgency. The author, herself a representative of this people, explains the meaning of the concepts of what is sacred in the mentality of her people and tries to reconcile the needs of progress with the preservation of the traditional way of life.
