This article examines the social characteristics of students identified as being “in deep breach with the requirements of school life, or in the process of dropping out” and taken in charge in a program designed to prevent students from dropping out of middle school. The starting point of this reflection is the updating of the work on the students of this system with regard to the territory. Indeed, the territorial context shows that each workshop welcomes students with distinct social characteristics that can constitute stigmas within the educational system. Social stigmatization then becomes academic and explains the latent function of this instrument for taking care of students who are “out of school norms”.
