In the past years, historiography of South America has focused on the study of discourse in identity formation, a fact that stresses the importance of the idea of nature in narratives by several Latin-American thinkers and writers. Following this framework, this article aims at identifying and thinking about some elements related to the idea o nature and identity based on the narrative of the journey made by Argentinian writer Domingo Faustino Sarmiento to Montevideo in 1846.
