Acute hemolysis in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency a study in 20 patients
Abstract
All patients were male 13 to 53 years old. 19 of them had fever; acute hemolysis occurred 2-3 or more days after administration of drugs in 15, and 4 had acute hemolysis only one day after the drug ingestion. One had diarrhea without fever and ingestion of drug preceded the acute hemolysis. Duration of hemoglobinuria ranged from one occasion to 8 days in 16 patients with record. Azotemia was studied in 18 patients, 14 gave positive result. In 8 cases with follow-up study of azotemia, the duration ranged from 5 days to 6 weeks. Peritoneal dialysis was done in 3. One of these 20 patients died. The clinical and hematologic data as well as 4 examples with various clinical severity are presented in detail.
