The strong behavioural and cognitive effects of nicotine have been known for centuries. Actually, the ligand-gated ion channel superfamily, specially which nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, are extensively studied. The understanding of their harrnacology and physiology rnay help to understand sorne relevant brain processes(neurotransmítter regulation and nociception)and rnany diseaseswhere these channels have been involved (rnyasthenia gravís, Parkinson, Alzheirner, schizophrenia). This review summarize some broad inforrnation on structure, classification and function of nicotinic receptors to understand their participation in sorne nervous systern process and the therapeutic possibilities ofthese rnolecules.
