The survival of organizations depends on their adaptation to the evermore competitive environment of the day. The main competitiveness areas are rapid technological developments, shortened product life cycles and rapid change of customer requirements. Therefore, organizations need to respond to these challenges by adapting to better, cheaper and faster problem solving methods throughout the product development process. Although not widely utilised by small companies, TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) is one of the valuable tools for such innovative problem solving approaches. We use the TRIZ approach and the traditional brainstorming method, and demonstrate the effectiveness of this combination by carrying out a case study on design of a bed base scissors lifting system. The results confidently indicate that the final product is more reliable, cost-effective and lighter as compared to the traditional ones.
