Payment for research participants - DOI: 10.3395/reciis.v2.Sup1.209en
Abstract
This paper looks at reasons that have been given in support of and against offering financial payment to participants in biomedical research. The objective is to question the reasons that lead a person to decide to participate in research, especially the notions of risks and benefits involved in participating, as well as the informed aspect of consent in theses cases. The article draws a distinction between payment, reimbursement, and appreciation. Based on a historical review of the emergence of payment as an option for participation, the article proposes a series of procedures for the protection of the interests and rights of participants in biomedical research.
