The box-merging implementation of the box-counting algorithm

Abstract

Fractal analysis is a powerful tool for the classification of materials. However, until now, there were no efficient tools that could process large or color images due to the processing time required. In this article we present a fast, easy to implement and very easily expandable to any number of dimensions variation, the box merging method. It is applied here to RGB test images which are considered as sets in 5-D space.
