Arctic Council: results of the first year of Finland’s chairmanship
Abstract
The article analyses the first year of Finland’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council (2017–2019). The following main priorities of the chairmanship are examined: environmental protection, including biodiversity conservation in the northern polar zone; development of communication networks in the region; an increase in the number of weather stations for monitoring the state of ice, ocean and atmosphere; educational programs for indigenous young people. It is emphasized that the cooperation in the Arctic region between Finland and Russia spans a number of fields and is effective, as well as mutually beneficial.
