The article analyses the first year of Finland’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council (2017–2019). The following main priorities of the chairmanship are examined: environmental protection, including biodiversity conservation in the northern polar zone; development of communication networks in the region; an increase in the number of weather stations for monitoring the state of ice, ocean and atmosphere; educational programs for indigenous young people. It is emphasized that the cooperation in the Arctic region between Finland and Russia spans a number of fields and is effective, as well as mutually beneficial.
