Los términos: eficiencia, eficacia y efectividad ¿son sinónimos en el área de la salud? Are the terms: efficiency, efficacy and effectiveness synonyms in the health area?
Abstract
Con frecuencia se emplean los términos eficacia, efectividad y eficiencia en circunstancias que su significado es diferente. Ellos pueden tomar numerosas acepciones en dependencia del área en que se apliquen (medicina, gerencia, ingeniería, etc.). En este trabajo se analizan varias de sus definiciones partiendo de las que se plantean en el diccionario general, hasta las que se utilizan en el contexto de la salud, con la finalidad de comprender las diferentes acepciones y emplear el término más apropiado en cada situación. Finalmente desde el punto de vista de la economía, la eficiencia se define como alcanzar los objetivos por medio de la elección de alternativas que puedan suministrar el mayor beneficio; que se expresa por el cociente de los resultados obtenidos y el valor de los recursos empleados. Por otra parte, la eficacia se define como la relación objetivos/resultados bajo condiciones ideales y la efectividad como la relación objetivos/resultados bajo condiciones reales.The terms efficacy, effectiveness and efficiency are frequently used under circumstances that make them have different meanings. They may take numerous meanings depending on the field where they are applied (medicine, management, engineering, etc.). Some of their definitions are analyzed in this paper, starting from the ones appearing in the general dictionary to those used in the health sphere, aimed at understanding the different meanings and at using the most appropriate in each situation. Finally, efficiency is defined from the economic point of view as the attainment of objectives by the election of alternatives thay may produce the greatest benefit expressed by the quotient of the obtained results and the value of the resources used. On the other hand, efficacy is defined as the objectives/results ratio under ideal conditions, whereas effectiveness is considered as the objectives/results ratio under real conditions.
