Postcommunist transformation: the patterns and features in the Republic of Bulgaria

Abstract

The experience of post-communist transformation in the Republic of Bulgaria is considered in terms of display of patterns and special features of this process. The specific of Bulgaria, the place of the country in Europe, post-communist changes peculiarities, external influence and internal factors of Europeanization are analyzed. Political Development of Bulgaria after 1989 is characterized as a “revolutionary modernization”. An author emphasizes that frequent changes of governments slowed down the progress of structural reforms in Bulgaria. Problems of social and economic development, identification, achieving national compromise of the main areas of reform are noted. Also dynamics of the views and priorities is marked. The key role of the modernization of public administration is emphasized and the stages and characteristics of this process in Bulgaria are traced. It is highlights on preparation for accession to the European Union as an important factor in mobilizing of Bulgarian reformers efforts. The author pays attention on a need for continued reforms to achieve the targets declared in Bulgaria during EU accession.
