The Grave of Julius von Schlosser, the Bust by Josef Thorak, and Renate Wagner-Rieger. Tasks of an Assistant at The Institute for Art History around 1955
Abstract
The author discusses the history of the Vienna Institute for Art History in the 1950s based on Renate Rieger’s work as an assistant. The author focuses mainly on the issue of her upholding the founding principles of the “Vienna School of Art History”, communicating with former classmates in both the West and the East behind the “iron curtain”, and colleagues who emigrated to the West. The research primarily focuses on obtaining the libraries of Josef Strzygowski and Julius von Schlosser, and the placement of Schlosser’s busts of Josef Thorak in the university’s courtyard and central cemetery in 1955.
