Distance education stands out in the current educational context. The research that led to this article, conducted by the Laboratory for the Study of Human Learning of the State University of Rio de Janeiro, investigated the process of tutoring of a Pedagogy online course of this University. We seek to understand the difficulties encountered and the skills necessary for the exercise of tutorship. The need to develop a teaching practice for courses at distance led us to study the processes occurring within the virtual teaching practices, aiming to improve the teaching and learning. Given this framework, we found many mentors or teachers who are ahead of the scenario of distance education in their training had no experience in this modality. When they work in this environment, they find a new field of discoveries and challenges, but facing some difficulties. The tutors interviewed mentioned that the development of tutorial skills as a way to overcome these difficulties. So it is in the tension between the difficulties and responsibilities of tutors that the emergence of new pedagogical procedures necessary for distance education happens.
