Comparison of Heavy Metals Accumulation Rate (Cd and Pb) in invertebrate and Fish (Alburnoides eichwaldii) in Tajan River, Mazandaran Province, Iran

This study was performed to determine the trends of heavy metals transfer (cadmium and lead) from water to macroinvertebrates and the fish species, Alburnoides eichwaldii in 5 stations in the Tajan River in autumn and spring. Concentrations of lead and cadmium heavy metals in water samples, benthic invertebrates, and liver and muscle tissues of fish were determined by the ICP-OES instrument. The results showed no significant differences in metals concentrations in water and macroinvertebrates among different seasons and stations (p>0.05). In macroinvertebrates, the concentrations of lead and cadmium in dry weight were 64.815±58.381 and 5.249±3.32 µg/g in spring, respectively, and 67.74±71.49 and 7.148±4.53 µg/g in autumn, ][respectively. The highest and lowest concentration of lead in the muscle of A. eichwaldii was 2.04 and 0.471, respectively, and was significantly different between stations 1 and 5 (p<0.05). The highest concentration of cadmium in the muscle of A. eichwaldii's was 0.006 and the lowest was 0.002 and was significant among stations (p<0.05). The results showed that bioaccumulation of heavy metals (Pb, Cd) in macroinvertebrates was significantly higher than the accumulated metals in A. eichwaldii's muscle (p<0.05). Moreover, the accumulation of heavy metals showed a reversible trend with increasing food levels in the food chain and the number of heavy metals in macroinvertebrates was greater than that of fish.
