Abstract

This article analyses the State-financed life insurance policies issued in 1918 by Istituto Nazionale delle Assicurazioni (INA) in favor of Italian Army soldiers, NCO’s and officers in the aftermath of Caporetto. It was an innovative welfare measure for the fighting troops, with no precedent in Italy, and with a very large diffusion among the military. It also describes the regulatory framework, the implementation steps taken for launching and managing the project by the Istituto Nazionale delle Assicurazioni (INA), the economic impact on the soldiers and their families. Analysis is mostly based on original documents from the INA historical archive (Board of Directors meetings minutes).
