The question of women gambling addiction in novels hasn’t yet been fully studied. In this study we are aiming to build a connection between the representations of women gamblers in literature and the diagnostic criteria proposed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), in order to establish the pathological aspect of their practice and to be able to study them with the tools of clinical psychology. We selected four novels for this study: La Rabouilleuse [The Black Sheep] by Balzac, The Player by Dostoïevski, Hors d’atteinte? [Out of reach] by Emmanuel Carrère and L’Accident de soi [The accident of self] by Jeanne Orient.
