Problems of cross-cultural training of pre-service foreign language teachers
Abstract
The article deals withtheoretical problems and practical tasks of cross-cultural training of Ukrainian foreign language student teachers majoring in specialty “014.02 Secondary Education” who should not only be ready for foreign language cross-cultural communication, but also be able to teach pupils and students this kind of communication in their future professional activities. The development of the cross-cultural education conception (aims, principles, content, tools), the theory of forming professionally oriented cross-cultural communicative competence, in particular its conceptualization (definition, content and structure, modeling, interconnections with other competences), and the main areas of implementation in curricula and course books of new generation are considered in this article as urgent tasks. It is suggested to differentiate general the cross-cultural communicative competence from the foreign language cross-cultural communicative competence. The first one is the final goal and the expected result of the complex cross-cultural training of a specialist, on condition that all disciplines are included in this process and the cross-cultural component of their content is singled out, and corresponding cross-disciplinary coordination is provided. The second one is primarily formed in the foreign language classroom. The important tasks are modelling in course books main aspects of cross-cultural communication and processes of forming cross-cultural competence as well as the problems associated with them. The examples of the tasks listed above are given in a series of four language course books “DU” written by a group of German and Ukrainian professors and researches (2009–2017). These course books are based on modern cognitive-communicative, action and personality oriented methodology and encompass cross-cultural, competency-based, reflexive and level approaches to teaching foreign languages and cultures.
