INTRODUCTION: Smoking is an important public health problem in the world. This research was performed to determine the smoking rates and the influencing factors of the nursing students. METHODS: The universe of the cross-sectional study comprised 377 students of the nursing department. A questionnaire consisting of 2 parts (socio-demographic characteristics and smoking-related questions) was applied to 309 students who were in the class between 30 November and 16 December 2015. Data were evaluated in the package program and frequency and average chi-square were used in the analysis of the data. p <0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: 34.3% of the students who participated in the survey were smokers. Statistical significance was determined between father's educational level and gender of students and smoking status of students (p<0.05). Statistical significance was found between smoking status of students and smoking habits of mothers, elder sisters and close friends. The increase in the smoking rate affected the courses of the students negatively (p <0.05). Enjoyment and pleasure, 31.1%, is the first reason among the reasons for the students to start smoking. 64.1% of the smokers stated that they tried smoking under 18 and 26.4% of smokers stated that they were influenced by their friends. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The statistical significance was determined between the smoking status of the students participating in the research and the smoking habits of the parents, elder sisters and close friends, fathers' education level, gender, change of the course situation to worse and smoking habits of close friends.
