In October 1977, Brown University hosted the first International Symposium on Fernando Pessoa. Forty years later, Inside the Mask: The English Poetry of Fernando Pessoa was organized in that same pioneering spirit, in honor of George Monteiro—who, at the outset of his seminal work, claims: “[Pessoa recognized that] writers influence other writers and that, by implication, the specific consequences of such influence are worth study [...]. Inquiry of this nature is especially rewarding in the case of Pessoa and nineteenth-century literature written in English, for Pessoa was both bilingual and bicultural.” (Monteiro, Fernando Pessoa and Nineteenth-Century Anglo-American Literature, 2000: 1). Focusing on a body of English poetry that continues to grow, due to discoveries in the Pessoa archive at the National Library of Portugal, this collection of essays is the first publication exclusively devoted to the Portuguese author as an English poet. It contains critical and textual material—featuring previously unpublished poems, translations and marginalia.
