In view of the practical problems encountered in ocean sample management, such as complex sample types, diverse forms and difficulties in accurately determining their "identity", this paper designed a set of 30 code bits including 13 code segments by taking the ocean samples as the coding objects, taking the relevant national basic standards of classification and coding as the basis, and using the methods of the composite classification combining area classification and linear classification. Furthermore, this paper presented the code tables and coding methods that could record the sample collection information, status information, original sampling information and segmentation and cutting information. With reference to the existing national standards, the working experience and the consensus of experts in the ocean field, a hierarchical classification system for ocean sample management was established to meet the needs of "identity" pre-requirements of ocean samples and to match the needs of ocean sample management. The ocean sample management classification code could accurately express the logical relationship between ocean original samples and derived samples and has strong applicability and scalability. It can not only meet the needs of ocean sample management, but also be applied for other sources of samples.
