Simulation Case: Neonate With Fever Requiring IO Line

Abstract

Abstract This resource is a simulation lab case designed for fourth-year medical students, emergency medicine interns, and pediatric interns. The case features a neonate in septic shock requiring an intraosseous (IO) line. The objectives of this case are for students to recognize septic shock, the need for access and fluids, and the need for antibiotics. This simulation lab will help medical students and interns (especially those in emergency medicine and pediatrics) to become more comfortable treating neonates with shock. It will also help them differentiate between normal versus abnormal vital signs in a neonate. This simulation lab reinforces the idea of using an IO line on a neonate who is in shock. It also reviews the appropriate broad-spectrum antibiotics to use for a neonate. Since this is a simulation lab and therefore differs from an actual patient, it is designed more as an intellectual exercise of dealing with a sick neonate rather than as a procedural learning experience. If the learners are not doing the correct interventions and not catching the cues, it is okay to end the simulation portion early. This allows more time for debriefing.
