Abstract

Louis Marin, with his passion for the world’s civilisations, was, in an original way, both an ethnologist and a politician. He sought to develop the presence of French cultural institutions around the world, both for scientific purposes and to counter German cultural influence. At the beginning of the 20th century, at a time when Hispanism was still in its infancy, mainly around the University of Bordeaux, his intervention in the French Chamber of Deputies was decisive in ensuring that the necessary funds were allocated to the foundation of Casa de Velázquez.
