Most of modern scholars consider that the king of Macedonia Philip II has drowned three thousand Phocian soldiers captured after the battle of the Crocus Field during the Sacred War. This contribution seeks to show that such opinion is based on an misinterpretation of Diodorus, XVI 35, 6. Furthermore, numerous historical considerations suggest that a slaughter of this kind had never taken place.
