This essay analyzes several major themes of Romanian political symbolism, arguing that the growing distance between the popular and the political elites’ representations over the main political symbols entails populist discourses and thus weakens Romanian democracy. Cynicism is appropriated here as a symbolic political discontinuity between the representations of both government and opposition, depending on the political context and their alternation to power.
