In the present work, an attempt has been made to understand the dynamic performance of Automatic Generation Control (AGC) of multi-area multi-units thermal–thermal power system with the consideration of Reheat turbine, Generation Rate Constraint (GRC) and Time delay. Initially, the gains of the fuzzy PID controller are optimized using Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm. The superiority of DE is demonstrated by comparing the results with Genetic Algorithm (GA). After that performance of Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) has been investigated. Further, a TCSC is placed in the tie-line and Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) units are considered in both areas. Finally, sensitivity analysis is performed by varying the system parameters and operating load conditions from their nominal values. It is observed that the optimum gains of the proposed controller need not be reset even if the system is subjected to wide variation in loading condition and system parameters.
