Moroccan Nationalism aspirations within the framework of the Second World War: A misunderstood pragmatism
Abstract
The intervention of Moroccan Nationalism during the Second World War has been raised in some studies. From these works, one concludes that the nationalists of the Spanish Zone showed a Germanophile attitude and proceeded in collusion with the Nazism. In this article we considered the appropriateness of these affirmations evaluating the question from an international and regional perspective with the Franco-Spanish protectorate as backdrop. For that purpose we bring the Moroccan point of view unpublished in Spanish and a little known documents belonging to Varela Archives. Contemporary testimonies and the Arab bibliography contribute to offer a more complete vision of the situation, and consequently help to check and clarify some of the opinions concerning to this matter.
