Novye Issledovaniâ Tuvy (Feb 2016)
A. S. Ondar’s documentary novella about 20th century Tuva
Abstract
In 2015, Aleksandr Syur-oolovich Ondar, a novice Tuvan author, won the regional literary prize named after People’s Writer of Tuva M. B. Kenin-Lopsan. This is a review of the novella which brought him the prize – “Dan hayaazyn daamydyraldy nagymy” (“The flow of life at dawn”), published in Tuvan language in 2012. The document-based novella tells the story of the writer’s father, Syur-oolOndar, a renowned wrestler and educator, multiple champion of Tuva and a winner in a number of Naadyms (traditional stockbreeders’ festival). The book is based on the memories of the champion preserved by his relatives, colleagues and friends, as well as on media articles. We believe Aleksandr Ondar’s book will appeal to a wide audience of readers, especially to students majoring in pedagogy.
