Antiplatelet drugs are recommended for patients with coronary artery disease, especially if the patient has a coronary stent implantation. Premature discontinuation of antiplatelet drugs either by the patient or medical personnel is the most important risk factor of stent thrombosis which may be complicated by acute myocardial infarction and death. In general, discontinuation of antiplatelet drugs in the patient undergoing dental procedure or some kind of surgery carries a higher risk. Most dental procedures as well as many types of surgery can be performed safely in the patient who continues with antiplatelet therapy.
