The study presents the tablā teaching in two universities in India. The research surveys the educational approach and the artistic and social consequences on tablā culture. In this institutional framework, the study describes the importance of the oral tradition within a specific teacher-students relationship but also the written dimension. The investigation shows that these single courses can’t be entitled to prepare professional musicians as expected in Hindustani music, for lack of specialization and time. On the other hand, these institutions prepare new teachers, provide general and technical knowledge for jobs in the world of music and deliver degrees providing social recognition. Furthermore, they have promoted the gharānā, that has become a real institution and that refers to a prestigious identity, widely claimed among Hindustani musicians.
