The proposed article aims to describe and analyze the relationship that sociologists have with fictional cinema through their references to movies, directors or fictional characters in their texts, and to question this use in placing it within the framework of the sociological method while pointing out the epistemological questions that it raises. Four types of references are exposed, which are all different statuses granted to these works: document, schematic illustration, support for methodological or epistemological reflections or knowledge of the social world. But how and why is it possible to find dimensions of the social in works of fiction? Ability to model the work of fiction, "decision of plausibility", beyond the cinematographic question, several questions relating to the administration of evidence are raised in the background: methodological (recording the image and sound and the use of storytelling techniques in social science methods) and epistemology (storytelling and model in sociological reasoning; “truths of fiction”).
