The poem “Those girls who walk...” in the context of the literary work of V. Khlebnikov
Abstract
This article analyses the poem Those girls who walk… (“Devushki, te, chto shagaiut…”, 1921) by Velimir Khlebnikov. It is studied in the context of Khlebnikov’s literary quests; besides, the analysis reveals the importance of extra-linguistic factors. The article combines both biographical and structural semiotic methods of text analysis. One should particularly note that at the time when the poem was created, Khlebnikov was no longer a very active experimenter with words, as in the earlier years. On the contrary, he strove to the clarity of images and created his works based on folklore and live Russian speech, i.e. the spoken language. The analysis of the poem through the prism of facts of Khlebnikov’s biography and work leads to the establishment of the paradoxical character of the text in question. Its formal contradiction (consisting in the “content/form” opposition) reveals the internal, deep, fi gurative-semantic, ideological opposition, which is the confrontation between the poet and the crowd.
