Abstract
Media criticism in academia has long been riven by a notorious and enduring opposition between two approaches: political economy of communications and cultural studies. The hypothesis the author presents here, based on study of the limitations of the main attempts to integrate the two approaches, is that the point of contact between the two will also need to address the strategic issues raised by the neoliberalization and commodification of academia.
