Antoine Alexandre Brutus Bussy (1794-1882), a French engineer, pharmacist, and physician, out carried important researches in the areas of inorganic and organic chemistry. To him we owe the first exact analysis of alkaloids, particularly morphine and quinidine, an isobaric method for liquefying sulfur dioxide, chlorine, ammonia, and other gases considered to be permanent, the isolation of the elements beryllium and magnesium, a valuable interpretation of adsorption, the discovery of sulfur trioxide, saponin, ricinoleic acid, and the components of the essence of mustard
