The deep sea floor between Africa and Antarctica is divided into two provinces by the continuation of Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The bottom sediments on the continental slope around Prince Olav Coast and Amundsen Bay are hemipelagic clays which are rich in SiO_2 and poor in CaCO_3, Fe_2O_3, Al_2O_3 and P_2O_5.
