Elections in the Empire represented an event of the most important and routine of Brazilian political life, although the research directed to this subject is still relatively scarce. This text analyzes the political practices typical of the electoral period, emphasizing, in particular, the efforts of the government and the elites to impose their political will on the population with the right to vote, as well as to guarantee the social order during the elections in the province of Pernambuco in the second half of the 19th century.
