The article analyzes the work of the outstanding Azerbaijani playwright and writer of the twentieth century Abdurrahim bey Hagverdiyev. His works "The Broken Union", "The Unhappy Young Man", "Magic of the Fairies" and others are studied here in the light of modern national theoretical thinking. During the analysis, literary creativity was studied not in isolation, but in the context of Azerbaijani literature. The theme of the first tragedies of the 19th century - "The Broken Union" and "The Unhappy Young Man" (although one was written in St. Petersburg, and the other - in the author's homeland) are based on plots from the life and everyday life of Azerbaijani beks and landowners, with whom the playwright was deeply familiar. Between the realities of life described in The Broken Union and the events in The Unhappy Young Man, a period of about ten to twelve years elapsed. The spiritual and moral maturation of the author is the reason for the ideological development of Abdurragim bey Khagverdiyev's "Unhappy Young Man" in comparison with the tragedy "The Ruined Union". This development manifests itself both in the nature of the events and in the attitude of the playwright to his characters. The article refers to studies written about the life and work of Abdurrahim bey Khagverdiyev, and uses them accordingly.
