Questions Vives (Dec 2022)
Comment des scientifiques en formation envisagent-ils leur propre participation dans la gestion de la pandémie de Covid-19 ?
Abstract
Scientists played an important role in the management of the Covid-19 pandemic, a situation that can be considered a sociotechnical controversy. In this context, we are interested by the roles future scientists attribute to themselves, by the group of social actors they associate with when they exercise these roles, and by the ways they conciliate their multiple identities. Twelve future scientists took part in an individual semi-structured interview. They attribute to themselves five main roles in the context of the pandemic: be respectful of sanitary measures (as a citizen; lead by example (as a future scientist); contribute to the management of the pandemic through one’s student job (as an essential worker) or through one’s previous training (as a healthcare professional); take care of one’s loved ones (as a citizen); inquire (or stay informed) and inform others (as a citizen or a future scientist). Some participants present a merged identity, others a compartmentalized identity; still others a dominant identity.
