Language and cognition in Alzheimer's disease / Linguagem e cognição na doença de Alzheimer

Abstract

Clinically, Alzheimer's disease is defined by cognitive changes. Among them, language has frequently been the focus of studies and although there is a consensus about the prevalence of semantic alterations and about the evolution of linguistic symptoms, it has still not yet been possible to clarify the nature of certain alterations. Recent studies have added data to the classic knowledge about loss of cognitive abilities and its interaction with language, as is the case of alterations in working memory. Our objective is to revise and update the literature about language in Alzheimer's disease and, particularly, research conducted with Brazilian population, emphasizing its contribution to the knowledge in multiple areas involved with this subject.
