Can AMH Replace Ultrasound in the Diagnosis of PCOS
Abstract
AMH is a hormone released by the developing and small follicles in the ovary. It circulates in the blood and has actions in the hypothalamus as well as in the ovary. Measurement of AMH is now well established and is routine in women who will undergo ovarian stimulation. AMH is also a measure of the number of small follicles in the ovary and correlates well with the ultrasound assessment of follicle numbers. It is now part of the recommended diagnostic criteria contributing to determination of polycystic morphology and can replace the need for a diagnostic ultrasound. Values are age dependant, affected by the oral contraceptive pill and weight and variable depending on the immunoassay used. In this talk I will discuss the latest development in AMH as a diagnostic tool contributing to the diagnosis of PCOS.
