Control of electric spring for frequency regulation
Abstract
The authors propose a novel control of electric spring for frequency stabilisation. Frequency stability is an important part of power grid stability. At present, utilising energy storage devices, such as batteries, to stabilise frequency fluctuation in the power grid is a hot topic. However, the high cost of energy storage devices becomes a bottleneck in their applications. Electric spring in series with the non-critical load provides a cost efficient solution for frequency stabilisation. The relationship between the active power of non-critical load (P) and voltage of critical load (U(L)) is given by a detailed derivation. Then a novel control is put forward for frequency regulation based on theoretical derivation. A simulation model of single-phase electric spring in PSCAD/EMTDC is established to validate the theoretical derivation. The detailed simulation results show that electric spring employing the novel control is capable of stabilising frequency fluctuation.
