“Nossa Senhora do O”, de Antônio Vieira, e o problema da inclusão da voz no barroco
Abstract
The article investigates the acoustic and imagery dimensions of the figure of “O” in the sermon “Nossa senhora do O” (1640), by Antônio Vieira, to propose that while the image refers to geometry, the inclusion of the voice (as opposed to language) concerns both Christian catharsis and historical context. In this case, we will use the rest of Vieira's sermons, as well as the works of Hansen and Pécora, to show their relationship with the decision of the Concílio de Trento not to wage war, but to include the gentile for correction, which will lead us to conclude that the inclusion of the voice has a domesticating function.
