This essay holds that the imaginative capability of the mind and its outputs occupy an important place in Shaftesbury's moral and aesthetic theory. Furthermore, it shows how reading Shaftesbury's work as centred on the relationship between imagination and moral sense can point out, apart from its obvious debt to Platonism, what Shaftesbury's ideas owe to Empiricism.
