Brain organoids and “organoid intelligence”: a neuroethical critique
Abstract
Background: The article “Brain organoids and ‘organoid intelligence’” delves into the cutting-edge research surrounding the cultivation and utilization of brain organoids. It highlights the potential of these miniaturized, simplified versions of the brain to revolutionize our understanding of neural development, disease mechanisms, and neurophysiology. Objectives: To model complex brain diseases innovatively and to consider the ethical implications of organoid technology. Methods: The methods are philosophical and neuroethical, id est, a systematic reflection dealing with neuroscience and interpretations of the same brain research. Results: The results suggest a significant exploration of how organoid “intelligence” could reshape future neurological research and treatment paradigms. Conclusion: The conclusion emphasizes the importance of navigating the scientific and ethical landscape carefully as this field progresses, underlining the critical balance between scientific ambition and ethical responsibility.
