Abstract This is an orientation course for first-year emergency medicine interns to help familiarize them with pediatric emergency procedures. The procedures included in this procedure are: pediatric lumbar puncture, pediatric tube thoracostomy using a Seldinger technique, pediatric IO placement, pediatric umbilical vein catheterization, pediatric central line, needle cricothyrotomy with jet insufflation, and pediatric airway. The aim of this module is to provide a hands-on laboratory experience to residents to enhance competency with key pediatric procedures that residents may be required to perform in the emergency department setting. This resource delineates the competencies in a step-by-step approach, as well as provides some tips for success when performing the procedures in the clinical realm. The low frequency of opportunities to perform emergency procedures in pediatric patients combined with the high stakes when these procedures are required makes them a prime area for simulation-based practice. We have augmented our emergency medicine residency curriculum with this Pediatric Procedures lab that occurs annually to teach these skills and provide for supervised deliberate practice. Each resident who has been through the lab has stated that his/her confidence in their knowledge of the procedure and his/her technical skills to attempt the procedure in the clinical environment were improved from baseline.
