The Effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy on Stress Reductionin Afflicted Elderly Men to Heart Diseases

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy on stress reduction in elderly men afflicted by heart diseases. The method was quasi experimental pretest – posttest design with control group. For this aim, 50 men of the patients in Qazvin were chosen by Judgmental Sampling Method, and assigned in two groups (25 in experiment group and 25 in control group). acceptance and commitment therapy was administered to the experiment group in eight 90 minutes sessions in 2 months period.Two groups completed Cohan perceived stress questionnaires (1983) before and after treatment and in follow-up period after 1 month. Results of MANCOVA test showed that acceptance and commitment therapy have significant effect on perceived stress and it decreases negative perceived and increases positive perceived stress scores. These results except positive perception remained in follow-up period, but the two groups had no significant differences in positive perceived stress in follow-up period. As a result, acceptance and commitment therapy can increase positive perceived stress and reduce negative perceived stress in elderly men afflicted by heart diseases.
