It is important to reveal characteristics of water circulation in polar oceans and their variability for better understanding of the global climate system. For the first step, some scientific results have been reviewed and then future work discussed. At the workshop, the necessary and importance of long-term monitoring studies in the Southern Ocean were emphasized. Also, recent activities in the Arctic Ocean were presented. These topics will contribute to planning the future strategy of polar oceanography.
