Emergency Department Sign-Out Pulmonary Embolism Simulation Case
Abstract
Abstract This resource contains a series of case-based simulation exercises highlighting transitions in care. This educational tool involves multiple patients in an emergency department setting. One case is a programmed high-fidelity handoff case of a patient with pulmonary embolism. Also included are two low-fidelity noncritical cases. Participants will be expected to manage the care of all three patients after receiving sign-out from the instructor. Debriefing materials for handoff education as well as management of pulmonary embolism are provided. The purpose of this case is to prepare residents and students to appropriately continue care of a patient with pulmonary embolism after receiving sign-out. It is specifically intended for emergency medicine residents, internal medicine residents, and senior-level medical students. This case was created as part of our emergency medicine resident simulation curriculum. This case is based on an actual patient seen in our emergency department and highlights specific teaching points and potential pitfalls in treatment algorithms. The simulation venue offers a unique opportunity to address team dynamics as well as provides a forum for didactic learning as it is often difficult to debrief a critical case while working in real time patient care settings.
