Background. Issues of combating illicit trafficking in weapons are regulated by Article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. It should be noted that this area in the work of the internal affairs bodies is one of the priority areas, because. associated with ensuring public order and security, protecting the rights and legitimate interests of a person and citizen, property, the constitutional order of the Russian Federation. Crimes related to the illegal circulation of weapons carry an increased public danger. This is a threat to the security of citizens, the political, economic and social structure of the state. Violation of the legislation in the field of arms trafficking leads to a significant deteriora-tion in the crime situation. Therefore, the role of the state and law enforcement agencies in the fight against crimes under Art. 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, as well as other crimes in the field of illicit trafficking in weapons and ammunition. The pur-pose of the work is to study the problems of combating illicit trafficking in weapons and ammunition in modern conditions, to develop proposals for improvement. It is concluded that countering the illicit trafficking in weapons should be complex and multifaceted. Mate-rials and methods. The implementation of research tasks was achieved on the basis of an analysis of the positions of some scientists who are studying the organizational and legal foundations for combating illicit trafficking in weapons and ammunition in modern condi-tions. The methodological potential includes methods of comparative legal and historical and legal analysis, which allow us to compare the approaches and features of the fight against illicit trafficking in weapons and ammunition in modern conditions. Results. The problems of combating illicit trafficking in weapons and ammunition in modern conditions have been studied, issues of development and improvement of legislation in this area have been identified, attempts have been made to address issues of preventing crimes under Art. 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Conclusions. It is concluded that it is important to work out ways to solve the problem of combating illicit trafficking in weapons and ammunition both in the criminal law, operational-search, and criminological contexts. It should be taken into account that crimes in the sphere of illicit arms trafficking are de-termined by a whole range of socio-economic and socio-cultural factors, i.e. are in close interaction with the state of society in a particular historical period.
