Sterilization effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide low temperature plasma on rigid gas permeable contact trial lens

Objective To compare the disinfection effect of hydrogen peroxide low temperature plasma sterilization and traditional lens disinfection on rigid gas permeable contact lens (RGP), so as to improve the clinical management procedure of RGP trial lens. Methods A total of 90 RGP trial lenses used by patients in our hospital from April to August 2020 were collected and randomly divided into 3 groups. Group A was treated with modified hydrogen peroxide low temperature plasma sterilizing method (n=30); group B was disinfected with conventional conditioning solution (n=30); and group C was sterilized with anti-bacterial case made of polymer injection material (n=30). The preserving solution of the 3 groups was respectively cultured for 5 d and then tested with the automatic microbial culture system of American Simmer TREK 528, and a comparison of the sterilization effect was made among the groups. The test was performed once a month for 3 months. Moreover, patients' ocular surface condition was examined with a slit lamp, and the comfort level after wearing was evaluated through questionnaire survey. Results The bacteria culture of group A was negative with the sterilization effect of 100.0%, while abnormal bacteria were detected 2 cases in group B and 1 case in group C, with the disinfection rates of 97.7% and 98.9%, respectively, though there was no statistical difference among the 3 disinfection methods. In addition, the results of corneal examination and comfort questionnaire survey showed no statistical difference among the groups as well. Conclusion Hydrogen peroxide low-temperature plasma sterilization has a thorough disinfection effect with a safe and simple procedure, and is worth popularizing.
