Antonio Machado y Álvarez, Demófilo, is considered the founder of the sciences of folklore and anthropology in Spain. But during his life he only suffered rejections and forgetfulness, which have remained alive, to some extent, until today. Ramón Menéndez Pidal, considered one of the founders of Spanish and Romanic philology, was, on the other hand, a highly respected figure, who had an enormous academic recognition. This article compares the two models and methods, and underscores the modernity of the method of Demófilo.
